Changes, Challenges & Crisis

Remembering the Civil Rights Era in the Diocese of North Carolina, 1963-1973. You are invited to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church (403 E. Main, Durham) Saturday, June 3, 10:00 a.m. to  3:00 p.m. for a retrospective on this important decade. Go behind the headlines of the General Convention Special Program, Malcolm X Liberation University, and the Black Panther Party’s Free Ambulance Service. Consider the legacy of this era in our individual and corporate lives, and in our ongoing efforts toward racial reconciliation. Two groups of panelists, along with audience participants, will offer eye-witness accounts and reflections. An optional tour of the Pauli Murray Family Home, led by Barbara Lau, Director of the Pauli Murray Project, will follow the program. This home was recently designated National Historic Landmark and is the future home of The Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice. A registration fee of $15 includes lunch. To register check the diocesan website under “News & Events/Upcoming Events” or call Lynn Hoke at 919-602-4305.

Nursery Volunteers needed for summer

We’ve been blessed with an increase in our young babies and fortunate to have had two functioning nurseries–one for babies and one for toddlers–over the past year! As we come up on the summer, we have several staff leaving for large portions of the summer or no longer able to work with us for various reasons. As you might imagine, the hiring process takes a bit of time. While we are diligently working to fill some of the roles in our nursery, we are hoping that we might be able to fill the gap with several from among our congregation. We are in need of an adult(s) who can rotate into our baby nursery during the 10am liturgy on Sundays until the beginning of the program year in September. Helpers must be over the age of 18 and must pass a background check.

VINI AYITI! Come to Haiti!

The next mission trip to visit our partner school in Molas, Haiti is May 25-29, 2017. Medical expertise is welcome but not required. In fact, we would love to include travelers who want to interact with the school children in an educational, Bible study, or art or music capacity. Mature youth are also welcome. Don’t let the cost (roughly $900) stop you – there is assistance! Booking the flights is the trickiest part of the preparation so please talk to Diane Steinhaus (dianesteinhaus@gmail.com) as soon as possible if you are interested in going.

CROP Hunger Walk

Join a community wide event to help feed hungry people locally and around the world. CROP Hunger Walk 2017 will take place on April 23 at 2:30. This 3.7 mile walk through the streets of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and the UNC campus is a fun and friendly way to raise funds and build awareness. There are several ways to help. Become a walker, sponsor a walker, donate online or volunteer to assist with “day of the walk” needs (www.crophungerwalk.org/HolyFamilyChapelHill). Help us reach our Parish goal of 40 walkers and $4,000 raised. For information contact Alma Gaudette at adgaudette@bellsouth.net.

Palm Sunday Intergenerational Event

Join us for an intergenerational event at 11:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall and Library. We will fold palm fronds into crosses and enjoy other activities that help us remember Jesus’ journey into Jerusalem. Families are invited to take a Holy Week Poster to be completed at home during the rest of the week. Also during this time, adults and children are invited to walk a set of interactive Stations which are based on the Scriptural Way of the Cross.

Outdoor Workday

Outdoor workday is planned for April 8th, and it will be held from 8:00-10:00 a.m. because of two funerals that will be held later in the day, the earliest one at 11:00 am. We will clean and beautify the grounds, place plants, and water as needed in preparation for the Palm Sunday and Easter services during the following two weeks. Join us at 8:30-9:00 a.m. if that fits your schedule better.
